Dear Mother,
True to the word this will be just a note as it is so late at night. I'm just sending these few lines that will help you not to worry quite as much.
I just came off guard duty and are we having a real old New England snow storm or blizzard. It was blowing and snowing a sticky snow all last night, to-day and I guess it will continue all night. I mean it is some storm.
Here I am in my hole and have just finished chunking up a couple cracks with old bags so the darn snow won't blow in. I've a little fire and with so much snow on top of all that dirt it pretty warm.
No mail for a few days now except some writing paper with those two pictures of Claude's house. Gee, does the place look swell. (It looks more like a southern plantation house with columns) So he's not making anything. Ha ha.
That must be a nice camera Jane took those with.
Oh yes, several of those small Portland papers have come. You thank him or his girl for sending them.
As I told you this is only a note so will say good night. Oh yes, those shoes just can't be beat, they're swell. Good night maybe someone else will be digging me out in the morning.
Love
Charles
