7 Dec 1943 "The Complete V-MAIL & Those Eggs" (Post #16)

Northern Ireland
Dec. 7, 1943

Dear Mother and Folks,
Notice the big seven in the date and you'll realize two years ago today those yellow bellied rats with slanted eyes laid their first eggs on Pearl Harbor. They'll live to regret that day as will all others who seek to gain by this war.
Received a v-mail letter from sister Helen tonight. I also heard good news, they say tomorrow will be a big mail call. As you can see we all sweat out mail call. It's the biggest thing we have to look forward to except returning home.
Wish I could do something for Christmas but I've given up. Above all things I wanted to send the little children (nieces and nephews) home something but it's out of the question. They don't understand and I know they'll be looking for something from Uncle Charlie. If I'd have left it up to you instead of trying myself you might have been able to do something. Oh well, it would have caused you a lot of trouble so I guess there's nothing to do now. I did get a few nice cards but gosh the prices.
I'm well and may you all be the same. I did wake up last night so darn lonesome I got up and took a little walk before I could go back to sleep. Things like that come and go but I guess something I'll never forget. Oh well, only pray that I may return home and then you may once more be happy. Say hello to Dad. Love Charles (a Kiss to Mom)

There's always been political cartoons even of Pearl Harbor
